History teacher, Mr Summa, has been teaching for 25 years and sponsoring Academic Decathlon for 10. He first became a history teacher because of his own amazing U.S. History teachers, Mr Beck and Coach Rodriguez. The two inspired him to share his love of history with other kids and inspire the next generation. 

“What I try and do is get the quiet kid in the back to smile everyday.” Mr. Summa said. His favorite part about teaching is interacting with students everyday and passing on knowledge of his favorite subject.

Summa decided to return to Alvin High School after college because it’s his home. He first started teaching at Harby Junior High before deciding that the U.S. History course was not as extensive as he wanted. After teaching at AHS, Summa decided to sponsor Academic Decathlon.

“My favorite memory teaching AcDec is the first year we made it to state, it was my first year doing AcDec and I couldn’t believe it. We got to go to San Antonio and compete against some legendary schools,” Summa said. 

He calls himself a very competitive person and uses AcDec to pass on that competitive spirit. As their sponsor, Summa has taken the Alvin Academic Decathlon team to state competition 7 times in 9 years.
